Nikodem’s Fight: A Step Toward a Pain-Free Childhood

During a routine follow-up visit in Poznań, the words we had feared most fell from the doctor’s lips:“Nikodem has had another relapse.” In that instant, the world seemed to stop. Time froze, hearts raced, and tears filled our eyes. Once again, we were thrown into the whirlwind of fear, pain, and desperate hope—hope that this time, we could fight back and help our little boy triumph.We didn’t waste a single moment. Immediately, we reached out to one of Poland’s leading specialists in Warsaw, determined to give Nikodem, or Nikoś as we call him, the best chance possible. On April 22nd, the diagnosis was confirmed. But the challenges did not end there. Doctors also diagnosed dorsiflexion of the foot, a condition that made every step a battle. Despite months of intensive rehabilitation and daily exercises, Nikoś’s foot remained stubborn, uncooperative, and painful. Today, there is hope on the horizon. Doctors have outlined a surgical plan to correct his foot issues and finally grant him the chance to walk smoothly and without pain. The procedure involves lengthening the Achilles tendon and transferring the tibialis anterior tendon to the lateral cuneiform bone. Preparation will begin on October 13th with a cast, and the surgery itself is scheduled for October 28th. This is a milestone in Nikoś’s journey—a light at the end of a long and difficult tunnel.
Yet, with hope comes fear. The financial burden of surgery, rehabilitation, and ongoing care is immense. Beyond the procedure itself, we must cover the costs of follow-up visits, travel to Warsaw, accommodations, and months of specialized therapy afterward. The road to recovery will be long and uncertain, filled with challenges we cannot face alone.
